Any Other Business?

Dear All,

Boy scouts and hotels usually aren’t usually a very acceptable mix but the reviews were all right and I had every reason to believe we would be well received at the BP International Hotel. After all, it was named after the founder of the Boy Scout program Sir Baden Powell and I was a former decorated “Cub” with a “Winter Sports” and “Sewing” badge (which ironically I could not install myself).

Check in was a breeze and my prompt salute ensured we were taken seriously. A harbor view room high up on the 20th floor was secured and everything went smoothly until, when prompted if I required anything further, I pushed the envelope and suggested two senior girl guides and four boxes of their cookies might complete the experience. Luckily a language barrier deflected most of the potential embarrassment.

The hotel staff was helpful all though Sir Powell (see bottom left corner) I think would be very disappointed by his scout at the Tour Desk who seemed keener to promote gambling field trips to Macau rather than address my simple request for a more traditional scouting past time.

The organization certainly has changed since my mother picked me up for the last time three decades ago. That winter I spent two hellish nights in a shady shelter some other kids built using snow and trees, sleeping on a single, made of hay.

The comfortable and well appointed BP International is proof both myself and the Boy Scouts have come a long way…

Salutations,

Mw
